It has been a fine summer to hear music, one which has had many firsts to accompany that big goodbye. Aside from those Fare Thee Well shows was a sold-out Electric Forest, the Dear Jerry Concert, and the Seaside Allstars and the Old and in the Way Incident at Gathering of the Vibes, not to mention all the other great music that’s been around. It has been a grateful time to be alive, and as such I see no better way to wrap up the summer than with Lockn’ Music Festival.

In its third year, Lockn’ maintains its place among the top festivals with yet another incredible lineup of the best in jam. If you did not get a chance to catch the Fare Thee Well shows, you will be happy to see all four remaining Grateful Dead members on this year’s lineup. Even if you got to see it – have another round! They will each perform unique sets: Billy & the Kids with Jason Hann, Dominic Lalli and John Popper; Mickey Hart with EOTO; Phil Lesh & Friends with Carlos Santana, Warren Haynes, Eric Krasno, Barry Sless, Rob Baracco, John Molo, and more; and Bob Weir as the featured guest on Saturday.

“The Music Never Stopped.”

Jefferson Airplane is also celebrating fifty years of music, and Lockn’ managed to lock down an incredible event for this occasion. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady will be joined by Rachel Price, GE Smith, Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams, Jeff Pehrson, Justin Guip, and Bill Kreutzmann in channeling the spirit of Jefferson Airplane. Following this performance will be a tribute to Joe Cocker called Mad Dogs & Englishman, which will feature Tedeschi Trucks Band, Leon Russell, Dave Mason, Rita Coolidge, Chris Robinson, Eleven 1970 Alumni, & more. It really has been a year of firsts and of goodbyes, and it’s great to know that the good stuff keeps on rolling.

And the good stuff rolls on with returning sets from Widespread Panic and the String Cheese Incident, whose musical prowess has held their position on this lineup with great ease. Panic will also be joined by Jimmy Cliff for one set, and the String Cheese Incident will team up with the Doobie Brothers for the first Doobie Incident. Also returning to the lineup are Umphrey’s McGee, Gov’t Mule and Hot Tuna, and new to the lineup are Soulive, Strangefolk, Robert Plant & the Sensational Spaceshifters, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Galactic, and more. In keeping the Grateful style, Melvin Seals & JGB with John Kadlecik will be playing two Blue Ridge Bowl morning shows, and Keller Williams’ Grateful Gospel will be bringing in Sunday Morning as well. Party smart!

I have no doubt that this crowd will do just that. In my experience with this festival, the people in attendance know that, at the very least, we are all there for the music. Whatever else happens, it all gets appreciated in some fine sense.

And how could all this go unappreciated, what with such a grand location to enjoy all this great music and all these wild minds? The Appalachian Mountains roll gradually in the landscape like a shifting wake, green and breezing with light life, and the cool winds of early September moderate the heat of the day before a long, soothing night. It is a great place and time to have a trip like this.

Cheese & the Gang – Lockn’ 2014

There are several activities to enjoy throughout the weekend, including biking, yoga and disc golf, and there will be a range of non-profits and greening initiatives to keep the weekend conscious and healthy. Tickets for this well-rounded event are available at $285 dollars for general admission, with student and military prices at $200. Single day tickets are also available and camping passes can be found here. When I think back to my most cherished times – the ones that filled me with a mystical sense of spirit and life and the fuel to go through it all with a laugh and a grin – I always get back to Lockn’.
